Description: In August 1970, the first ultra-performance Torana, the GTR XU-1, was developed by Holden along with Harry Firth of the Holden Dealer Team for competition in popular Series Production touring car racing within Australia, as well as in off-road rallying and unique rallycross events. However, the highlight purpose of the Torana GTR XU-1 was to keep the Holden brand competitive against the larger and more powerful Ford Falcon GT-HO in the Hardie-Ferodo 500 (Bathurst) endurance race that some consider to be the jewel in the crown of Australian motorsport.  (text courtesy of wikipedia)

Based on the 1968 HK Holden Kingswood, this beautifully styled coupe could be powered by the Holden straight six, or as in the GTS version, a Chevrolet 327 cubic inch V8 and four-speed manual transmission. With Ford winning the 1967 Bathurst 500 race with its first Falcon GT model (powered by a Mustang 289 cubic inch V8), Holden hit back by winning the 1968 enduro. And comfortably too: the first four placings were Monaro GTS, Monaro GTS, Monaro GTS, Monaro GTS. This was the first outright Bathurst 500/1000 win by Holden. Description: The 1968 XT model featured a mild facelift, with a divided grille, and inset driving lights for the GT. The GT also replaced the thick lower body stripes of the XR with narrow stripes along the waistline from grille to tail light. The tail lights were still round, but instead of the small round indicator of the XR, the XT model had a long indicator across the light. Description: The 1969 XW Falcon introduced bolder styling which featured raised ridges down each front guard and a 'buttressed' c-pillar (although the rear windscreen was not relocated), which made the cars appear larger than the XR/XT models. The GT variant gained a bigger V8, the 351 cu in (5.8 L) Canadian-made Windsor engine, producing 291 horsepower (217 kW) equipped with dual exhausts and sports air cleaner. The styling of the GT went wilder with the addition of an offset racing-style bonnet scoop, bonnet locks, and blackouts, as well as 'Super Roo' stripes along the full length of the car. Description: The SS Group A SV was a race homologation special based on Holden’s VN Commodore SS, which was built at Elizabeth, South Australia but extensively modified by Holden Special Vehicles (HSV). It was powered by a 215 kW (288 hp) 4.9 L HEC 5000i V8 engine, which was mated to a six-speed ZF S6-40 manual transmission. Description: The XB series bore minor cosmetic differences to the preceding model, the XA, aimed at giving the car a more muscular stance. First time equipment offerings included standard front disc brakes on all models and an available carpeted interior. Launched in September 1973, the XB GT was to be the last Falcon GT for almost 20 years, until the 25th Anniversary EBII GT in October 1992. The XB GT received a new aggressive front end with a twin nostril bonnet, similar to the style found on the '71-'73 Mach 1 Mustang. Description: The "Super Roo" sticker was a promotional decal used by Ford Australia to symbolize their performance cars, first appearing on the XW Falcon GT in 1969. It was an Australian variation of the cartoon figures found on US muscle cars, designed to appeal to younger buyers and become the advertising motif for the vehicle. The grinning kangaroo on spinning wheels also appeared on other sporty Ford models. Description: In the somewhat wet 1972 Hardie-Ferodo 500, the lightweight HDT Torana GTR XU-1 was able to finally claim victory against the heavyweight (Ford Falcon) GT-HOs, driven solo for 500 miles (800 km) by Peter Brock. This would be the start of the 'Peter Perfect'/Torana legend, and the first of five Bathurst wins for the Torana in its colourful 10-year racing career at Bathurst. Description: Visually, the XC Falcon was given a restyle treatment that softened its appearance from its predecessors. The XC had a less aggressive nose which incorporated two round headlights on Falcon models and two rectangular headlights on Fairmont models. On sedan and wagon models, Ford also addressed the vision problems of the XA and XB by utilising redesigned rear doors, which debuted in May 1976 with the ZH series Fairlane, with a lower window line that had the effect of removing the coke bottle styling of the XA and XB. Description: HOLDEN TORANA SL/R 5000 Holden’s V8-engined Torana came to be at a time when parts of the world were turning their back on fuel-guzzling cars. Parts of the world excluding Australia anyway. What the SL/R 5000 had on its side was swagger. The SLR was an emblem of the cashed-up bogan; brash and loud with the looks and aerodynamics of a Besser (concrete) block.
