The Fall of Phaeton - Sir Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1604/1605, reworked c. 1606/1608

This design originally came from an engraving by Hendrick Goltzius in 1588, which I have restored, redrawn, and digitized. The text reads: "NON AMBIRE PROBAT SAPIENS, SED LAVDAT HONORES, LAVDA CONTINGANT SI TAMEN ILLA PROBIS. SIC PHAETONTAEVS NIMIVM TEMERARIA LAPSVS VOTA DOCET TANDEN FINE CARERE BONO." Which roughly translates to: "The wise man demonstrates that he does not search for but appreciates the honors. And recognizes if happens to honest. I believe this to be a Phaeton from between 1910 and 1914. Correct me if I'm wrong. Automobiles Grégoire was a French manufacturer of cars and aero engines, established in 1902, that operated for about 20 years in the early 20th century.

Vintage Wheels: the Majestic Duesenberg SJ Phaeton

Today in the T-Shirt design challenge I knew I wanted to make something with a guy falling out of the sky so I went to Icarus and found Phaeton and then struggled mightily and then gave up and as I was falling back to earth because of this design I felt like the world hated me because I couldn’t do it so that was the key to finish the design.

Rubens depicted a moment of high drama in this popular Greek myth that was famously recounted in Ovid's Metamorphoses (c. 8 AD). Phaeton, the Sun-god Apollo's son, had begged and begged his father to allow him to drive the Chariot of the Sun across the sky. After Apollo finally conceded, his worst fears were confirmed: the rash youth had neither the strength nor the experience to control the chariot and keep it on its regular course through the heavens. The horses bolted in an erratic pattern, so that Earth either froze because the Sun Chariot was too far away, or it was scorched by the Sun's heat.
