I never though I would see two Lancasters together and this opportunity will probably not be repeated. Description: Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar - The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar is a VTOL aircraft developed by Avro Canada as part of a secret U.S. military project carried out in the early years of the Cold War. The Avrocar intended to exploit the Coandă effect to provide lift and thrust from a single "turborotor" blowing exhaust out of the rim of the disk-shaped aircraft. In the air, it would have resembled a flying saucer.
Description: The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Lancaster bomber set against a glorious evening sky. Canada is home to most of the surviving Lancaster bombers and home to one of the only two airworthy Lancasters, the other is in the UK. This Aircraft carries an emblem depicting the Victoria Cross awarded to Andrew Mynarski. On June 13, 1944, his Lancaster was attacked by a German night fighter. As the bomber was falling to the ground in flames, he attempted to free the tail gunner trapped in the rear turret of the blazing and out of control aircraft. The tail gunner miraculously survived the crash and lived to tell the story, but sadly Andrew Mynarski died from his severe burns.
Description: As WWII drew to a close, the Canadian government adopted a policy to encourage the design and development of aircraft and engines in Canada. In 1945, Roy Dobson, head of A.V. Roe in Great Britain (which was part of the Hawker Siddeley Group), purchased the Victory Aircraft factory at Malton Airport in Ontario to establish A.V. Roe Canada Limited (Avro Canada). Avro’s Gas Turbine Division was spun off as its own company, Orenda Engines Limited, in 1956, and while Avro Canada folded in 1962, Orenda continued to produce jet engines until the mid-'70s.
