Description: In the summer of 2014 the Canadian Lancaster crossed the Atlantic Ocean for a tour of Britain with the only other airworthy Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. I never though I would see two Lancasters together and this opportunity will probably not be repeated. Description: Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar - The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar is a VTOL aircraft developed by Avro Canada as part of a secret U.S. military project carried out in the early years of the Cold War. The Avrocar intended to exploit the Coandă effect to provide lift and thrust from a single "turborotor" blowing exhaust out of the rim of the disk-shaped aircraft. In the air, it would have resembled a flying saucer.
Description: The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Lancaster bomber set against a glorious evening sky. Canada is home to most of the surviving Lancaster bombers and home to one of the only two airworthy Lancasters, the other is in the UK. This Aircraft carries an emblem depicting the Victoria Cross awarded to Andrew Mynarski. On June 13, 1944, his Lancaster was attacked by a German night fighter. As the bomber was falling to the ground in flames, he attempted to free the tail gunner trapped in the rear turret of the blazing and out of control aircraft. The tail gunner miraculously survived the crash and lived to tell the story, but sadly Andrew Mynarski died from his severe burns.
Description: Avro Canada & Orenda Engines: Pioneers of Canadian Aerospace Innovation** After WWII, Canada promoted domestic aircraft and engine development. In 1945, Roy Dobson of A.V. Roe UK founded Avro Canada by acquiring Victory Aircraft in Ontario. Avro’s Gas Turbine Division became Orenda Engines in 1956. Though Avro Canada closed in 1962, Orenda continued producing jet engines into the 1970s, marking a key chapter in Canadian aerospace history.
