Imagining what Circe would look like from Madeline Miller’s book

Greek Mythology, perfect for mythology lovers!

Circe, the sorceress, known for turning men into swine, stands in a small marble temple on a cliff overlooking the sea. She has a magic staff in one hand and a goblet of wine (presumably laced with one of her magic potions) in the other. In the distance, a Greek trireme sails towards her island. Perhaps this is the legendary Odysseus on his ten year journey. I created this to be part of my Greek Mythology series.  Typically, my works in this series are more an illustration of an individual character, but for this one, I decided to try more of a full scene with some architecture in the foreground and a distant view in the background. The Greek goddess Circe is featured in this rendition of the Major Arcana tarot card The Magician. This card illustrates a scene from Odysseus's visit to Circe's island, Aeaea. His ship is seen anchored on the water in the background. The four suits of the Minor Arcana are pictured here: swords, pentacles, cups, & wands. Though the sword and shield belong to Odysseus, they are in Circe's possession. She uses these tools to manifest her magic and temp Odysseus into staying on the island.

Woodpecker (1885) by William Morris is a vintage Victorian Era fine art Pre-Raphaelite textile tapestry garden pattern. From Ovid's Metamorphoses referring to the legend of Picus, an ancient king of Italy who refused to be seduced by Circe. In revenge, he was turned into a woodpecker. Gothic script reads "I once a king and chief, now am the tree barks thief, ever twixt trunk and leaf, chasing the prey.'
