Forth Rail and a single line. The Forth Rail Bridge is one of the most recognisable man made structures in Scotland, possibly even the world. It has been a permanent fixture over the Firth of Forth for over 120 years and is still in use. This single line piece has been in the pipeline for quite a while. The scale and detail required proved difficult and can be seen in the lesser quality of some of the lines. However, it encapsulates the spirit of the Single Line collection. Showing the complexity in objects and structures that on the outside might seem simple. The design you see is the 23rd attempt to get it right. Cramond Island has WW II fortifications and is linked to land by a causeway with a line of concrete pylons on one side, constructed as a submarine defence boom. At certain low tides sand extends to the island, tempting visitors to visit the island, though occasionally some are stranded by the incoming tide. Cramond (Gaelic: Cathair Amain) is a village situated on the east side of the River Almond where it enters the Firth of Forth forming a natural harbour, now a suburb of Edinburgh, in Scotland. Excavations have revealed a Roman past and, as of 2004, the oldest human site in Scotland. It was the birthplace of the Scottish economist John Law. Nelson’s Monument on the crest of Calton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland, replaced an existing mast with a signal-tower high enough to be visible to ships on the Firth of Forth and commemorates Admiral Lord Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. it is shaped like a spy glass, and from the top (unlike Nelson himself, who saw no ships) you can see the ships on the River. The stone structure is 106 ft high with 143 steps from a base 456 ft above sea level. The really smart aspect of this tower is the time signal installed at its top in 1852 to enable ships’ captains to set their chronometers accurately. A large time-ball drops on weekdays, at 12pm in Winter and 1pm in Summer coinciding with Edinburgh Castle’s One o’Clock gun.
