A dragster is a specialized competition automobile used in drag racing. Dragsters, also commonly called “diggers,” can be broadly placed in three categories, based on the fuel they use: gasoline, methanol, and nitromethane. They are most commonly single-engined, though twin-engined and quad-engined designs did race in the 1950s and 1960s. The design of dragsters evolved from the front-engined rail (named for the exposed frame rails) of the earliest days of drag racing, into the “slingshot” (with the driver between or behind the rear tires, or “slicks”) of the early to middle 1960s, to the modern type common in the 1970s. Depending on the class they run in, dragsters can be injected or supercharged (or turbocharged).

National Pass Gas Day is held annually on January 7, and there is no better time to express ourselves and free our bowels of stale air without shame. Passing gas is one of those things that will make anyone giggle, from children to adults. Did you know that the gas we pass contains methane and hydrogen, making them flammable? But not to worry, you need an insane amount of gas to be able to burst into flames just from passing gas. So, you can keep on passing as much gas as you desire.

There's no doubt about the fact that the bubbles of Abraham Lake are spellbinding -- but I found the myriad cracks in the ice, created from the lake level changing throughout the winter, fascinating as well. This triangle of bubbles and cracks was the best of both worlds!

When I visited Abraham Lake to seek out the famous bubbles, these cracks ended up being one of my favourite things to photograph. They fanned out all across the lake, sometimes obscuring bubbles but more often creating stunning scenes like this.

I make a yearly pilgrimage to this spot, which is one of the best places to see the bubbles in the Rockies due to the incredibly windy nature of the region that blows all of the snow off the ice. Case in point: the winds were about 60km/h when we were out shooting this sunset, and were strong enough that if you put down your tripod and let go, it would slide in a mad dash away from you across the ice! The bubbles themselves are methane from plant life on the lake floor that gets frozen on its way towards the surface. They are absolutely fascinating, and I easily spend hours shooting on every visit!

The famous methane bubbles of Abraham Lake. Every year, this man-made reservoir freezes, causing the plants on the bottom of the lake to decompose and release methane bubbles, which freeze in place in the ice. The result is a mesmerising display all across the lake.

Surface of Titan, computer artwork. This is Saturn's largest moon and the only moon to have a planet-like atmosphere. The atmosphere consists of nitrogen and organic compounds, mainly ethane and methane, which give it its distinctive orange colour. The surface of Titan is depicted as being covered in liquid methane, forming rivers and oceans. It is thought that the hydrocarbons form as sunlight acts on the methane in Titan's upper atmosphere. There are also mountains, thought to be made of rock and ice. Titan's atmosphere could resemble that of primitive Earth and could hold clues about the origin of life.

Triton, Voyager 2 image. Triton is the largest moon of the planet Neptune. Triton consists of ices and rocks and has a diameter of around 2700 kilometres. Triton's surface is mostly covered by nitrogen frost mixed with traces of condensed methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. The streaks are due to wind-borne deposits in the tenuous atmosphere. These images were obtained by the Voyager 2 spacecraft, which made its closest approach to Neptune on 25 August 1989.

Moo the methane monster

When you come to WALES, do you know your BUWCH from your TARW..? A buwch is a cow and a tarw is a bull... This might be a young bull without the including the horns - but whichever way - they're all bovine! Farming is a big thing in Wales as it is in many countries ~ but the current idea of tackling climate change and that of emissions - addressing CO2 and also methane CH4 - is one that is currently a hot debate! It's quite simple - CO2 needs to be stabilised by planting more broadleaf deciduous trees like the times of old - Sherwood forest ! Second to that - the emitters and producers of methane CH4 - that is often built up and emitted in the process of pasture digestion from cattle - must be curtailed... Along with this ...

An update of older work -I needed to resize it for someone who possibly wants a bigger version. I was playing around with a sunset photo I had taken, when I got the idea for a planet similar to Earth, populated with humanoid type creatures who find something to grumble about regardless of the situation. Their conversation might go something like: I can't believe it Zhrikplatth, that's the third time this Dasnuba that the Skyhop has been late. Keep your veins in, Krryp, at least we can enjoy another methane sunset while we wait. I used Photoshop and a Wacom Tablet to paint this image.

A black headed gull treads carefully along the shallows of the seashore almost horrified that he's heard bubbles creeping out of the seaweed - or rather 'Gullified' :D Anoxic muddy environments often give off methane... Poo eeee ! :D

Petroleum is not just used in cars. You can find it in basic everyday items like plastic, detergent, rubber, paint, pesticide, photographic film, makeup, candles and many types of medicine. Nonetheless, Petroleum is toxic and its extraction fuels climate change. We should use it wisely but still fight for renewable energies and alternatives to plastic. Now, alongside Petroleum extraction, cow farts have a big impact on our climate. This is yet another reason for us to make little changes in our lives. Changing our diet by reducing meat and dairy products would not only benefit our health but lessen our negative impact on our planet.
