Mut is a goddess of Thebes. Her name has the same root as the Egyptian word for ‘mother’ and this reveals part of her character in that, she is one of the pharaoh’s symbolic mothers. Her iconography is predominantly a slim lady in a linen dress, often brightly coloured blue or red in a pattern suggesting feathers, wearing a head-dress in the shape of a vulture surmounted by the combined crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt. She usually holds the lily sceptre of the south. She is part of the Theban Triad with her consort Amun and child Khonsu.
