Medusa gets rather a bad rep, but it’s only later myths (recorded by Ovid) that suggest she was turned into the snake-headed creature by a vengeful Artemis/Diana, taking revenge for… Medusa being raped by Poseidon/Neptune in Artemis’ temple. Yeah. That’s never sat right with me. So my Medusa is the traditional member of the three winged Gorgon sisters (as pictured on this Siana cup), but with added snakiness as to be recognisable. Medusa’s name also has links to the word for ‘protector’, so my Medusa has got a bit of a guardian thing going on…. hiiii-YA! I am a big fan of Medusa. This is a combination of 5 medusa mosaics. I made the center one, the other at the four corners are actual Roman mosaics.

Another picture especially (but not only) for connoisseurs: reflection nebula NGC 1333 in the constellation Perseus, surrounded by dark dust. It is approximately 750-1000 (depends on source) light years away from Earth. This nebula is one of the closest to Earth areas of the formation of new stars, rich in young stars. In the initial stage of life young stars are not visible because they are obscured by dust. Picture taken with newton telescope (750mm focal length) & astronomy monochrome camera.

While descriptions of Gorgons vary, the term most commonly refers to three sisters who are described as having hair made of living, venomous snakes and horrifying visages that turned those who beheld them to stone. Traditionally, two of the Gorgons, Stheno and Euryale, were immortal, but their sister Zola was not and was slain by the demigod and hero Perseus.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is coming! This funny space themed design features an astronaut riding a meteor and the phrase "Perseids are coming!". Watch the night sky in July and August to catch the yearly astronomical event. Once a beautiful maiden, Medusa was cursed by Athena to become a monstrous Gorgon. Writhing snakes replaced her hair, fangs and claws replaced human features, and her gaze turned men to stone. Though fearsome, Medusa's story highlights the danger of unchecked beauty and the potential injustice faced by women.

I recreated this 5th century Etruscan Gorgon, paint on Terracotta from Tarquinia, Italy, ca 490 BC. Gorgons were displayed to keep evil doers away... Italic people were quite superstitious. But then you never know...

My original illustration originally drawn all in white pencil. Yes, I borrowed Pegasus from a different myth. It helped with the scale.
