A poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) to advertise rail travel to Salisbury, featuring a detailed painting of its Cathedral, 1932. - Please Note: These are old posters which means they were not always printed straight and level so please don't be surprised to see some slight angle differences around the edges of the adverts or some slight imperfections in the images. -

Here's a view of Salisbury cathedral that most tourists don't get to see - and despite having visited the city countless times since moving to the area over 25 years ago, I didn't spot it either until this year. The street is St Ann's Street. Its mainly residential and on the edge of the quiet old part of the city. Of all the streets, this one happens to line up nicely with the spire. Based on my photos, I've painted this version in oil on a 12x16 inch board.

The Salisbury art market takes place the first Sunday of the month during the summer months. I was there in July selling my wares and couldn't resist the opportunity to take some reference photos for another painting. And after a couple of weeks work her is the finished 12x24 inch oil painting...

Salisbury (Wiltshire, UK) has had a lot of bad publicity lately (2018), so I thought it time I painted something of this beautiful city to redress the balance. The view I've chosen is the market place. During the day it can be full of market stalls, but at night they all disappear and you get to see the magnificent buildings around the square, and in particular this group of pubs, with their myriad lights reflected in the paving. I've painted this in oil on board 20x16 inches.

I was looking for a view of Butcher Row / Fish Row in Salisbury (Wiltshire, UK) that gave it an extra something. I found it on a rainy day on a regular shopping trip, with the reflections on the flagstone paving. Ordinarily there is bunting criss-crossing the walkway, but I've not included that as I think it detracts from the marvelous old buildings. I painted this in oil on board 12x16 inches in size.

With the low winter light, the windows on these historic buildings in Salisbury (UK) created pools of light across the shady road. I've captured the scene here in oil on a 12x10 inch board. You may spot some brush marks!

This oil painting is based on photo's I took in late Summer 2020 when things almost looked like normal for a while. Its a view of cafe life on the edge of Salisbury marketplace, where you can have tea and cake under the shade of the London plane trees whilst watching the world go by - and especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays when the adjacent market is trading. for me this is perhaps my most complicate composition to date with several complex elements to get right. Painted on a 20x16 inch board over the first week of Jan 2021.

I have painted The Maltings - a shopping area of Salisbury (UK) before, showing a cafe at one end. I spotted this view sitting on a bench, eating a sandwich and watching the world go by on the many paths that cross the area. What appealed to me was the pool of light either side of the gnarled willow trunk, framed beautifully by the foliage and the shade on the ground. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board.

The marketplace in Salisbury, Wiltshire (UK) holds a market every Saturday and Tuesday (and has done for several centuries now). Its a vibrant place with stalls selling all manner of things. I've created this oil painting of a typical day at the market based on photographs taken earlier this year. Its taken quite a few hours to complete, but I'm pleased with the result. I hope you like it just as much.

I think of this oil painting as 'where did he get that hat?' For the thing that stands out for me is the top hat carried by the statue of Henry Fawcett. As it happens there is a stall selling hats in Salisbury charter market, so he may very well have found it there. I wonder how many people notice the statue, let alone find out anything about the prominent figure represented. With trees in early leaf (around April/May), and bins carefully omitted, the scene has for me a magical quality. Painted in oil on a 12x16 inch board.

I am fascinated by the vibrancy of a good market, and especially the twice weekly market in Salisbury, with its ever changing mix of stalls, matching the ever changing weather. Here I've captured in oil on board a typical winter's day market, with a coffee and cake stall I've not seen before. Yes there is a toilet block just behind the seated gentlemen, but I was hoping it was discrete enough for you not to notice! Browse around to find my other Salisbury market paintings.

The Red Lion in Salisbury (Wiltshire, UK) is a refuge from the bustle of the city around it. Its an old coaching inn with a large courtyard filled with plants that turn it into an unexpected oasis. The Inn completely surrounds it except for a dark archway separating it from the street outside. The building dates from the 13th century, when it was built for those working on the cathedral nearby. I've painted this in oil on a 12x10 inch board from a photo I took on a rare rainy day in Summer.

Another in my series of oil paintings of the vibrant life of Salisbury market. This is the plant and flower stall (one of several), that sits in the corner beneath the trees during the summer months. To the right of this there is a French food stall which I may very well paint too!

I took this photograph on a stormy day at a time when the rain had abated. The road we were on took us past this iconic landmark on the Wiltshire Plains, so we stopped. Today, Stonehenge is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it's so old people really don't know why it was built. Sun worship is the popular thought and who is to say that is wrong? Certainly, the alignment of the stones seems to indicate an association with the Sun at the time of the summer solstice, but nobody really knows. What they do know is that some of the stones were probably brought there from south Wales; it's the closest known place in the UK where such stone exists. Much of the folklore that surrounds Stonehenge reflects a connection with the sky
