Broads Thatch Number of views as of 29th November 2017 = 820. Saw this rather lovely thatched bungalow and garden whilst on a boat trip from Wroxham in the Norfolk Broads (Norfolk, England). Many similar properties in the area have been demolished to make way for larger, more modern dwellings, but this is apparently one of the originals. Imagine being able to sit outside there watching the boats go by all day. Great if you don't mind being overlooked by thousands of tourists passing by every day during the summer months! Dorset Thatch Number of views as of 29th January 2016 = 400. A fine example of a Dorset thatched cottage. I won't reveal exactly where, but it's a village not far from Wimborne! Finished using PhotoShop Elements. Date: 9th April 2008.

Aztec Berber hybrid pattern

For original refer to Thatched Cottage. As the original image was an olde worlde thatched english cottage I felt that digitally changing it to give the appearance of an early cyanotype photo print would offer someone an interesting alternative to the original coloured pen and watercolour wash painting. Also available in black and white now too.

Welcome to the city of atlantis

This view comes from a trip I did to the Outer Hebrides quite a few years back now. It had been raining all day, but just a few minutes before sunset (at 10pm) the clouds rolled away and the landscape came alive in the golden glow of the sun. The location is the blackhouse village at Garenin on the Isle of Lewis, and I have painted it in oil on a 12x12 inch board using my wet into wet technique. If you have OS Explorer map 460 you may recognise this scene - and thats because its my photo - the source for this painting!

St Mary Bourne is one of a string of pretty little villages that trace the Test Valley up to its sources. It is the typical English country village with stone church and a cluster of cottages, many of which are thatched. Here I've caught a thatcher at work on one of the cottages. Painted in oil on an 8x8 inch board, I particularly enjoyed painting the parked cars as a band of almost black paint, to which highlights of blue and white transform into what you see here.

King Sombroner is a regular stop for me, as its one of the first places I come to when I'm out for exercise on my road bike. Its a pretty place withtraditional thatched cottages and a seasonal chalk stream that runs through it. In high summer the bed is dry and a mass of grasses, but over winter and spring it flows with fresh clear water from the surrounding hills. And its at its best when the daffodils bloom.

The village of East Coker is certainly one of the prettiest in Somerset, UK, with nearly all the houses thatched and a fine church which houses the ashes of the American poet T.S. Eliot. In his 'Four Quartets' there is poem dedicated to the village which begins with the famous line 'In my beginning is my end." (Nikon D5200)
