Description: Egyptian scarabs are really dung beetles. Khepri, the ancient Egyptian god of the morning sun, rebirth, and creation was the inspiration for this symbolism. Khepri rolled the sun across the horizon at daybreak like the beetle rolled its dung. The entire Egyptian civilization was always oriented towards solar deities. After all, their lush oasis was surrounded by vast, arid deserts where such beetles proliferate. In that light, this animal was a good one to honor and emulate!
Description: Eye of Horus symbolism meets the goddess Maat in this ancient Egyptian design. Mirrored figures, winged goddess imagery, and hieroglyphic inscriptions create a balanced composition inspired by Kemet, Egyptian mythology, sacred art, and temple iconography. A meaningful choice for Egyptology enthusiasts, ancient history readers, mythology fans, and admirers of symbolic African heritage art.
Description: This depiction of Sekhmet comes from an Ancient Egyptian menat counterweight. A menat was a type of heavily beaded ritual necklace and the Sekhmet image was used as a counterweight on the back. There are representations of women holding the necklace, possibly shaking them to make noise, during ceremonies honoring the goddess. Here you can see Sekhmet represented as a lion-headed goddess figure. I've recreated this depiction of Sekhmet in my own style based off a menat counterweight located in the Met.
