Back to my 2013 Paris trip. This is an image of Fontaine du Palmier, which was built in honor of Napoleon's victories. It is located at Place du Châtelet, (1st arrondissement within Paris). It is the largest surviving fountain from the Empire, built in the form of a Roman triumphal column with the names of Napoleon's victories and bas reliefs on the column, with a statue of Victory on the top. The name comes from the palm-leaf decoration just below the statue. The base of the column is decorated with four figures representing Prudence, Vigilance, Justice and Strength. In 1856, for some reason the column was moved and placed on a new pedestal ornamented with four sphinxes and two basins of water. All images are Copyright © 2015...
