The 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) – abbreviated 3rd SFG(A) and often simply called 3rd Group – is an active duty United States Army Special Forces (SF) group which was active in the Vietnam Era (1963–69), deactivated, and then reactivated in 1990. 3rd Group—as it is sometime called—is designed to deploy and execute nine doctrinal missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, direct action, counter-insurgency, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, information operations, counterproliferation of weapon of mass destruction, and security force assistance.

The 3rd Military Police Group (Criminal Investigation Division), headquartered in Fort Gillem, Georgia, supports commanders by conducting criminal investigations of serious, sensitive or special interest matters; preventing crime; preserving the force and Army resources in peacetime, combat and contingency operations throughout the Group's area of operations. As of 2010, the group consisted of 4 battalions located at Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and Fort Myer, Virginia, as well as the only airborne battalion in CID at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The 716th Military Police Battalion is a military police battalion of the United States Army based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. It is a subordinate unit of the 16th Military Police Brigade. The battalion is subordinate to the 16th Military Police Brigade. It is headquartered at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Company C, 52nd Infantry Regiment arrived in South Vietnam on 1 December 1966 and was assigned to the battalion. By late 1967 the battalion's mission was security and law enforcement in the Saigon/Cholon/Tan Son Nhut metropolitan area, South Vietnam. Specific security missions, involving approximately 83% of the military police/security guard resources of the battalion, included US Embassy, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV).

It provides law enforcement and force protection duties to United States Army Europe. Activated during the Vietnam War, the Brigade oversaw all Military Police operations in the country for a large portion of the conflict, undertaking a wide variety of missions throughout the country and providing command and control for other military police groups in the region. After Vietnam, the Brigade deployed units to several other operations, namely Operation Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort. The brigade itself also deployed to Kosovo.
