We have not had any snow here yet, so here is a shot from March 2006. This poor picnic table in the grounds of Blackness Castle, Lothian, Scotland had to wait a few more months before it was put to its primary use again.

The castle is first mentioned in 1449, although there had been a port at the nearby village of Blackness serving the royal burgh of Linlithgow since the thirteenth century. The castle came into royal hands in 1453 when the surrounding lands were annexed by King James II. It spent much of the next century serving as a royal prison housing the more prestigious of the King’s various enemies. Blackness is a village on the shore of the River Forth in Scotland. It lies within the council area of Falkirk, and the former county of West Lothian. The village originally served as a port for nearby Linlithgow (incidently, the town where I was born and grew up), with a harbour on Blackness Bay, an inlet of the Forth. As a port it was superdeded by Bo’ness, and fell into decline from the 17th century. The small village is today dominated by Blackness Castle, situated on a promontory overlooking the bay.
