Prodigy Communications Corporation was an online service that operated from 1984 to 2001 that offered its subscribers access to a broad range of networked services. Prodigy grew and evolved to become one of the major internet service providers of the '90s. The company claimed it was the first consumer online service, citing its graphical user interface and basic architecture as differentiation from CompuServe, which started in 1979 and used a command-line interface. By '94, Prodigy was the first of early dial-up services to offer full access to the web and to offer web page hosting to its members. Two years later, they retooled as a true ISP, making its main offering internet access branded as Prodigy Internet.

Long before the proliferation of broadband internet and connected smartphones, most people got their internet fix through dial-up services under the guise of curated online communities. Kids today will never know the terrible sound of a dial-modem as it audibly connected with the service or the painfully slow connection speeds. You've come a long way, baby...

Getting internet connectivity from the telecom mega corporations and cable companies of the world as most do today is rather perfunctory, but during the ‘90s and even into the early 2000s, you could get internet service from countless ISP's. Due to the lack of infrastructure needed to provide dial-up access, literally anyone could launch an ISP and one such example came from a very unlikely source - DB. On Sept. 1, 1998, DB and the network services company UltraStar launched BowieNet in the United States with the rest of the world to follow. The design is just dripping with the techno design style of the era, so whether you're a DB fan, a hacker, or just a geek, this one should do it for you.

Remember the days of USENET? Those early internet discussion forums were a great place to meet up, learn a few things . . .and get into some epic battles. If you are old enough to remember getting into a flame war over a dial up connection, this is for you!

How good it is to recall the pleasant chirping of the modem... Well, it was actually annoying, but still pleasant memories are attached to it, because with its help the world opened up for the first time.
