The Sydney Vivid Light & Music Festival kicked off tonight, May 24 with (amongst other highlights) a colourful dynamic display of lights beamed onto the Sydney Opera House. After about 30 - 40 minutes the heavens opened & most people ran for cover from heavy rain. My view from my vantage point at the Quay was often interrupted by cruise boats & ferries. This is the highlight of the Sydney winter & for those visiting Sydney this is a must see. The display rivals the great entertainment of 2011. At the beautifully manicured gardens known as Withycombe, it's flowers, lawns ,hedges, statues, house & tennis court were all very impressive but my attention was grabbed by this windblown, half wrecked dandelion in the middle of a large lawn. With a constant breeze blowing, I wasn't expecting to get a detailed shot, so was surprised to see this one come up so well. Unfortunately I had to crop it & missed out on some of the more colourful green sections in the background. Photographed with a Canon 400D, Mt Wilson, Australia. Located near Blackheath in the Blue Mountains National Park, New South Wales, Australia. The rock hangs into the Grose Valley. This spot is 2 hours drive west of Sydney & then an hours walk to this site (quicker if you have a mountain bike). The area is not fenced or well signposted. You need good hiking boots because of the steep surfaces & loose gravel. I wouldn't recommend taking children there. At the end of Ridgewell Rd there is a car park & the walk takes you to Baltzer Lookout. The Rock is visible from the lookout but you need to climb down the cliff to get a good view. The rock is much bigger than it appears here, but I wasn't game to get too close to the edge of the cliff. In spring the walk becomes an avenue of wi...

Marlbourough Tower at the Farm at Versailles, France. Canon 5D MkIII. The Queen’s Hamlet, Marie Antoinette’s quaint little village and farm which is also known as the L’Hameau de la Reine, is one of the highlights of Versailles. The hamlet was created in the style of a minature Norman village. It contained the farm, twelve thatched cottages, a dovecote, mill and tower, all of which Marie Antoinette had built in 1783 by her favourite architect, Richard Mique and landscape gardener, Andre Le Notre. Sylvia Falls near the Valley of the Waters at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains National Park in Australia. This is on one of my favourite walks & the track goes around the cliff to Wentworth Falls before you climb a steep cliff to the top of the falls. My other good shots of Sylvia are portrait format. I thought I'd try landscape format to show off the greenery surrounding the falls. Photographed with a Canon 400D, ISO 200, 2.5 seconds, F18.

This is the view as you approach the falls from above. After hundreds of shots of Sylvia Falls I thought I had photographed it from every angle but this view looked so nice with the ferns & orange coloured rocks that it begged to be photographed. Château d'Amboise at Amboise in the Loire Valley, France. The royal Château at Amboise is a château located in Amboise, in the Indre-et-Loire département of the Loire Valley in France. Confiscated by the monarchy in the 15th century, it became a favoured royal residence and was extensively rebuilt. King Charles VIII died at the château in 1498 after hitting his head on a door lintel. The château fell into decline from the second half of the 16th century and the majority of the interior buildings were later demolished, but some su...

This beautiful arch stands between The Louvre & the Tuileries Garden in Paris, France. Photographed with a Canon 400D. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel (firmly anchored to the tradition of the ancient triumphal arches) was built by Percier and Fontaine in circa 1806 to 1808 to celebrate the Napoleonic victories of 1805, and it was originally intended as a monumental entrance to the Tuileries palace. When that palace was destroyed by fire in 1871, it was generally agreed that the arch stood well on its own; nor was the palace greatly missed in that an exceptional view of the Champs-Elysées had been opened up. The proportions of the arch were directly drawn from those of the Arch of Septimius Severus in Rome. I didn't note the ...
