Miniature Forests on the Edge of Grand Prismatic Spring by Debra Martz Within the rainbow of orange, brown and red colors, some microorganisms live in communities of thick mats. Like a miniature forest, there are microbes that live on or near the top, similar to a forest canopy, using sunlight to perform photosynthesis to fuel the community. Organisms living deeper in the mat, similar to a forest understory, derive energy from the chemicals produced by the surface microbes. Just like a forest's counterparts, all of these organisms create an ecosystem in the expanse of a few inches depth. Extremophiles that live in hot springs are called thermophiles, heat-loving microorganisms. The design shows intestinal bacteria as you can see them (maybe not quite as colorful) under the microscope. Our body is a habitat for a large number of bacteria and other microorganisms. In particular, those roommates who settle in our intestines play a key role in our well-being. Bacteria make up the bulk of the human microbiome. Archaea, fungi and viruses are also part of the microbiome. The gut microbiome is often referred to as the "forgotten organ" because it takes on important functions in the body.
