A photograph I took when I visited the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

This is my first posted image from a five day trip to the Grand Canyon in late January, 2017. We almost didn't go because the weather reports were so dire. I'm glad we did go, because it was so beautiful. The dramatic weather was just what I'd hoped for, and the shots, like this one, are incredible. This was taken from Knob Turnoff, between Hopi and Mojave Points, on Hermit Road, late in the day. Moments before you couldn't see the Colorado River. The precipitation you see is snow at higher elevations turning to rain at the lower elevations. Many more images from this trip will follow.

Lightning strikes the south rim in the distance, as a monsoon storm passes over the Grand Canyon in August, 2014. Catching lightning in these circumstances was difficult due to the sheets and sheets of rain, obscuring the lightning. This was taken from Bright Angel Point. In the far distance, on the left, is Red Butte.

Mather Point at the Grand Canyon is a scenic viewpoint along South Rim, popular for its canyon vistas & proximity to the visitor center.

This is an image captured from Point Imperial in the Grand Canyon National Park. It seems that Point Imperial is the highest lookout in the park at close to 9000 feet above sea-level. You certainly are a long way up, but just look at the landscape, it is remarkable.

Navajo Falls is a gem that resulted from the flash flood that tore through Havasu Canyon in August of 2008. When you make plans to visit the Grand Canyon, always plan on more than one day. You never know what sort of weather you might encounter. This is a view from Point Imperial taken in August, 2014. There were lightning storms the day before, and a beautiful sunset. It rained all night and in the morning the entire canyon was filled with one big cloud. The cloud didn't start to lift until after 4PM. Those that stopped by for a day trip were awfully disappointed. I didn't think I'd get any good shots on the hike on the Point Imperial trail, and didn't want to get water in the lenses of my new 645Z, so I took my trusty Pentax MX-1, and got some good shots anyway. On the path to Bright Angel Point, this tree still stands, years after being torched in a fire started by a lightning strike. I like the silhouette it casts in this dawn sky over the Grand Canyon North Rim.

Lipan Point features some of the widest and most expansive canyon views along the South Rim, as well as the longest perspective of the Colorado River. This makes it an ideal spot to enjoy sunrise, sunset, and the night sky.

Lipan Point offers one of the most spectacular Canyon vistas in the entire park. Westward views seem to stretch outward forever, and Canyon walls present a tapestry of colors and textures.

A lone spectator contemplates the beauty that is the Grand Canyon, in this view from Bright Angel Point. The gray off in the distance is, as told by a ranger, 3 fires started by lightning the evening before. This was taken around 10 AM on August 11, 2014. By 1:30 PM the monsoon storms reformed and doused the flames. The following day the entire canyon was filled with clouds, disappointing many tourists that stopped by for only one day. This image was made from 11 stitched shots from a Pentax 645Z.

Taken just before sunset on January 24, 2017, this image tells a story of the day at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Snow squalls like this had passed through all day, sometimes obscuring the entire view of the canyon. I was lucky this storm had passed just north of us, allowing the sun to peak beneath the clouds and light up the North Rim. This was shot from the South Rim Trail overlook near Yavapi Point. I'd been there about one and a half hours taking panoramas in the freezing cold. When I started to leave, it was difficult to move. My pants had frozen below the knee, into tubes. They'd gotten wet from going up and down the trail all day, in and out of the snow, and froze because I'd been standing so long without moving. Th...
