The packhorse bridge crosses the Alyth Burn as it flows through Alyth. This was built in about 1500 and can still be crossed on foot as you explore the old part of the town. Alyth is in the region of Perth and Kinross in Scotland and lies just off the main road from Blairgowrie to Kirriemuir on the southern slopes of the hills that form the Forest of Alyth. In 1689, during the Jacobite Rebellion, the Battle of Killiecrankie was fought on the northern edge of Killiecrankie village. It was the first victory of the Jacobites – their Highland charge terrified and overwhelmed the British Government army under General Hugh MacKay in only 10 minutes. At the north-west corner of The Cross in Dunkeld (Dùn Chailleann in Scottish Gaelic), a small town in Strathtay, Perth and Kinross, Scotland is the Duchess of Atholl former Girls' School, erected 1853 in neo-Gothic style, and generally known as the Duchess Anne after its founder Anne Home-Drummond (1814-97), spouse of the 6th Duke of Atholl and Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria.
