The Royal Hotel at 619 Merchant Street (the corner of Merchant Street and Brooking Street) was built in 1905. Inspired by the real life Victorian-style Gentlemen's club founded in 1871 during the British colonisation of Burma. The building was built in 1880 and was visited by Rudyard Kipling and Paul Theroux. The building is now recognised as one of the heritage sites of Yangon.
