Post War, steam locomotives were aging and poorly maintained, hence the pre-war speeds were never attained. On the 23rd May 1959 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley set a post-war steam speed record of 112mph on Stoke Bank hauling a full passenger train. By the late 1950s, the age of steam traction was over and steam was being replaced by diesel power. Sir Nigel Gresley was withdrawn from service on 1st February 1966 and survives to this day in preservation.

Steaming out of Grosmont Station on the North York Moors Railway on it's way to Pickering, sporting 'wartime black' livery, LNER Class A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley is one of the most well known preserved stream trains, originally built for the London North Eastern Railway.

Named after Sir Nigel Gresley, one of Britain's most famous steam locomotive engineers, this A4 class steam train entered service in 1937 and was retired in 1966, since when it's been maintained by a group of dedicated steam train enthusiasts. Seen here steaming out of Grosmont in the North York Moors Railway towards Pickering it is painted in 'wartime black' and shows it's original engine number of 4498

The fastest recorded steam train

Sometime in the future this nameplate will be proudly displayed on someone's wall. Thanks to work from dedicated volunteers LNER Class A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley Steam Train continues to delight crowds. Taken here on a recent visit to the North York Moors Railway.

A4 Pacific Class - Union of South Africa, October 2018 The streamlined shape of the A4 Pacific class of locomotives set them apart from the rest in 1930s passenger rail travel in Great Britain. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), 35 of the locomotives were built between 1935 and 1938 at the LNER's Doncaster locomotive works. The most famous A4 of them all was of course the Mallard, which to this day holds the world record as the fastest steam locomotive of all time, reaching a speed of 126 miles per hour on the 3rd of July 1938. So, it was a great privilege to travel on a train hauled by this A4, the Union of South Africa. The locomotive was originally named 'Osprey' and had the LNER number 4488. ...
