This image based on my photo taken of Poinsettia Bridge is inspired by silkscreen design, campy paint by numbers, and the many national and state parks. Poinsett Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina was build in 1820 and is the oldest surviving bridge in South Carolina. It is named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, who is now best known as the man who brought Poinsettias to the US. The bridge may have been designed by Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument. No bathrooms or picnic tables and not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers, though it is very close to the road, thus visible from the car. I have never seen this area busy. Lots of trillium in early spring. See my other Vintage Travel designs.

The road bridge over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Abingdon is situated between Oxford and Didcot and was an important centre in medieval times, particularly because of the abbey of which a few buildings remain. The bridge in the image carries the road from the town centre to Dorchester-on-Thames. This image captured in late September with the first signs of autumn (or fall).

Pennsylvania has a lot of hidden beauty and this view is an example of that. We were there in the fall, enjoying some time by the Susquehanna River.

Originally captured on film in February 1984, this is an image of "Bridge House" in Ambleside, in the English Lake District. According to the plaque by the house, there was a time when people lived there. Today it is an information booth for the English "National Trust". I've walked by the house many times, even been in it to buy a postcard, and have always wondered why it came to be. Even though it was a gray day, this image, taken during in the winter (it doesn't snow much in England), exudes the colour that still resides. These are some very beautiful autumn leaves and a sun dappled stone bridge I encountered on a recent walk I took on my lunch hour. If you look closely there is a tiny white temple hiding behind the red tree. It was like a doorway to another world!

Halfpenny Bridge at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, right at the southern tip of the Cotswolds. This bridge is the last road crossing over the River Thames before the river becomes un-navigable. Just further upstream through the arch it gradually becomes narrower and shallower - no place for river cruisers! This bridge dates from 1792 and its name stems from the toll paid by pedestrians to cross, this ending in 1839. Lechlade is a market town very close to the border with Oxfordshire.

This is the Kalogeriko bridge, also known as "Plakidas" bridge, one of the most beautiful stone arched bridges in Zagori region (Ioannina, Epirus, Greece). In the background, Kipoi village.

The Town Bridge, or as it is known locally, The Water Bridge, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Newbury, Berkshire. The River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury in the early 1700s under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, work commencing in 1718. It was extended further west to Hungerford in 1798. The bridge probably dates from this period. The canal was finally opened to connect with Bristol in 1810.

Wallingford is an ancient and picturesque market town on the Thames between Reading and Oxford Here was one of the most important Royal castles in England. The first mention of a bridge was in 1141 when King Stephen beseiged the castle and Queen Matilda.The present bridge apparently has traces of the medieval structure.

The suspension bridge crossing the Menai Straits, connecting the island of Anglesey to mainland Wales viewed here from Anglesey. Before the bridge, the only means of crossing was by ferry - risky due to the fast flowing waters of the Straits. Cattle going to market on the mainland had to swim over - many being swept away by the currents! The bridge was designed by Thomas Telford, work starting in 1819 and finishing in 1826. It was designed so tall ships could sail undeneath.

The oldest stone bridge in the Highlands of Scotland which was the first bridge allowing the River Dulnain to be crossed with dry feet was built in what is now Carrbridge, Inverness-shire, Scotland, between May and November 1717 by a mason called John Niccelsone. He did so at the behest of Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant at a cost of £100. The main aim of the bridge was to ensure that funeral processions from the south did not have to be delayed reaching Duthil Church when the river was in spate and unfordable. The bridge was damaged by a great flood (the Muckle Spate) in 1829, leaving the present fragile looking archway we see today. Lechlade is a picturesque market town at the southern tip of the Cotswolds near the Oxfordshire border.
