Route 66 travelers who have passed through New Mexico surely recognize the landmark neon sign for the Sun ‘n Sand Motel that has stood along the side of the highway in Santa Rosa since the early '50s. The motel itself was built in 1952 and largely remained unchanged until it was updated and remodeled in 1998, but ended up closing down in 2012.

There is nothing left in the desert except birds and horses.
