According to his own statements he wanted to give the African-American population a voice. Archie Shepp Jazz musician, saxophonist, singer, pianist, composer and literature as well as theatre scholar. Spending his childhood in Philadelphia, Shepp learned piano and clarinet. As a teenager playing in Rhythm & Blues Band`s he already met greats like John Coltrane, but for the time being he took a different path. In the band Cecil Taylors, dedicated to modern jazz, he joined the formation New York Contemporary Five, which also includes the free jazz luminaries Don Cherry and John Tchicai.
