I took a lily from a bunch of flowers into the garden and look who else fell in love with it. The fact that it can be seen in most months of the year is no doubt in part due to it hibernating through the winter but emerging on warmer days. Records indicate that it may be the commonest and most widespread hoverfly in Britain.

This is a checkered beetle (Cleridae) which is frequently being mistaken as a tiger beetle. Checkered beetles have shorter feelers when compared to the ferocious tiger beetle

The adult Aulacophora foveicollis measures 5 to 8 mm (0.2 to 0.3 in) in length and about 3.5 mm (0.14 in) in breadth. The colour of the elytra varies from pale orange-yellow to bright orange-red to medium brown, and the abdomen is black with soft white hairs. The grubs are found in the soil and are slender and creamy-yellow, with pale brown heads and prothorax
