White stags have played a role in many mythologies and legends, especially in the North. The Celts believed them to be messengers from the otherworld. The white stag’s appearance would be an omen for whoever sighted it. The legends of King Arthur indicated that the white stag had a supernatural ability to avoid capture, and pursuit of the magical beast was akin to a spiritual quest.

Drawn using one of my own photographs as reference, I used mostly Sakura pigma micron marker pens and a brush pen for the darkest areas. Sika deer (Cervus nippon), spotted deer or Japanese deer is a deer species native to East Asia which has been introduced to many parts of the world, including England. Sika deer do not loose their spots upon reaching maturity, but in some subspecies these spots are rarely visible, as seen here. Their coat ranged from a reddish brown to black and occasionally individuals can be found with white fur. Stags have antlers, usually forked.

Roaring Stag Tribal - White

Drawn using one of my own photographs as reference, I used black marker pens using a stippling or dotting technique to build details. Roe deer are a small and dainty deer native to the UK, with a distinctive white rump and black and white markings on their face. Males have small pointed antlers.
