Labrys, a double-headed axe that's closely associated with the Minoan civilisation, and specifically with the worship of a goddess. In Crete, the symbol always accompanies female deities and may have been the symbol of their creator Goddess. It may also be interpreted as a butterfly relating to the Minoan butterfly goddesses shown in the shape of a labrys. According to some archaeologists, it was used by Minoan priestesses for ceremonies. Since the 1970s, it's been used as a symbol of independence and self-sufficiency, and strength among feminists and lesbians.The background was created by letting the colors spread under plastic wrap.

The inner silhouette is a ceremonial Minoan labrys, an ancient symbol associated with Goddesses. The sharp outer blades is a double-headed axe, celebrating feminist and lesbian strength and independence. The handle intersects the blades to form XX’s which, intersex being an exception, represents the chromosomes of a pair of women. And finally, the outer ring (on some products) is a solid boundary, defining our right to protect our bodies, spaces, and sexuality.

Labrys Lesbian Feminist Flag. The labrys was adopted in the 1970s by lesbian feminists as a symbol representing strength and empowerment. The color violet became associated with lesbians through the representation of the violet flower as a symbol of lesbian love, which originates from a poem by Sappho about a lost love wearing a garland of "violet tiaras, braided rosebuds, dill and crocus". The labrys is superimposed within an inverted black triangle rooted in Nazi Germany. Similar to the pink triangle design, the black triangle was used in concentration camps to designate prisoners with anti-social behavior, which included lesbians.
