During the Middle Ages, Galway was ruled by an oligarchy of fourteen merchant families (12 of Norman origin and 2 of Irish origin). These were the "tribes" of Galway. The city thrived on international trade, and in the Middle Ages, it was the principal Irish port for trade with Spain and France. The most famous reminder of those days is ceann an bhalla ("the head of the wall"), now known as the Spanish Arch, constructed during the mayoralty of Wylliam Martin (1519–20)

On one of my Sydney layovers, I went out for an evening stroll in Darling Harbour. When Crossing Pyrmont Bridge, I saw this city view and I loved the way the lights were reflecting on the water.

The harbourside building and moored ships at Stavanger ion southwestern Norway. It is the fourth largest city in the country and has a history stretching back to medieval times. Starting life as a village it grew into a fishing port. It was the discovery of offshore oil and gas that made it grow into the major port it is today. The old town and its harbour has old, colourful houses and quayside buildings, This image has been finished as a digital coloured drawing.
