Constituted in Army of United States 5 May 1942 as 423d Infantry Regiment, assigned to 106th Infantry Division. Activated 15 March 1943 at Fort Jackson, S. C. Thje regiment then staged at Camp Shanks NY and departed 5 September 1943, arrived in England 19 Oct 1943. Assault the Normandy breach in June 1944. The onSeptember 1944 assaulted Nijmegen Holland. Returned to France 28 November 1944, disbanded on 1 MArch 1945. The glidermen were assigned to the 327th Glider Infantry. Campaigns: Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe

Constituted 24 June 1921 as 406th Infantry Regiment, allotted to Organized Reserves, assigned to 102d Division, 7th Corps Area, and organized in October 1921. Ordered into active military service, less personnel, and organized 15 September 1942 at Camp Maxey, Tex. , as element of 102d Infantry Division. Inactivated 16 March 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. Activated 3 January 1947 with headquarters at Kansas City, Missouri. Inactivated 11 May 1959 at Kansas City, concurrently, Headquarters and Headquarters Company consolidated with Headquarters and Headquarters Company Headquarters, 3d Battle Group, 14th Infantry. The Battle Group was activated 1 June 1959 with headquarters at Kansas City.

The 106th Infantry Division was a division of the United States Army formed for service during World War II. Two of its three regiments were overrun and surrounded in the initial days of the Battle of the Bulge, and they were forced to surrender to German forces on 19 December 1944. The division was never officially added to the troop list following the war, despite having been almost completely organized in Puerto Rico by 1948; subsequently, the War Department determined the division was not needed and inactivated the division headquarters in 1950. Reorganized and redesignated 1 March 1944 as the 43d Signal Heavy Construction Battalion.
