If you look closely at a city map, you’ll notice the three rivers along the inner harbor appear to create the profile of a woman looking out toward the lake. I came to know her as the Milwaukee Rhine Maiden. Milwaukee lies on a bluff overlooking a crescent-shaped bay. The Kinnickinnic, Menomonee and Milwaukee rivers flow through the city into the Milwaukee Bay, eventually streaming into the Great Lakes. I spent a lovely afternoon in the small Swiss town of Stein am Rhein near the German border. The colorful timber houses are typical of the region and the wine produced locally is a nice addition to the pleasures of spending a few leisurely hours in the area.
