This beautiful panel of a garden scene was derived from the Prima Porta Frescoes from the so called House of Livia. These frescoes came from a basement room--where the Roman elite could keep cool in the hot summers while still enjoying this magical landscape of being outside. Some scholars have suggested that not all these plants and animals would be seen together at anyone time, therefore representing the Roman concept of cyclical time and the dawn of a new great age.

This design is based on a wall painting fragment of a Corinthian column, wheat, and fruit from the peristyle of the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale.

Discovered in 1760, this is one of the most famous and beloved wall paintings of a high-society Pompeian woman. She is richly dressed with gold-threaded hair and large gold earrings, bringing the stylus to the mouth and holding the wax tablets.
