The Mayflower was a ship that transported English Pilgrims, from England to the Americas. The voyage took over two months, and the ship faced many challenges. The Mayflower arrived at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, in late 1620. The ship itself was relatively small, about 100 feet (30 meters) long, and was primarily a cargo ship, not intended for passenger transport. The Mayflower's voyage and the establishment of Plymouth Colony are significant events in American history, as they represent one of the earliest successful English settlements in the US. I found an old sepia photo of the construction of Tower Bridge in The Thames Police Museum, and asked to turn it into a painting. I only had the stern of the ship. After research in the London Docklands museum, with the help of the curator, we found that a ship called the 'SS Ruahine' may have been up there during this period, so I was able to paint the whole ship from a very faded photo of her. It also shows the local boys nicknamed, The Mudlarks, playing in the dity Thames water, and a Police rowing galley with three officers nearby. A very detailed painting on a 100 by 80 cm canvas in oil. It took months to complete, but now you can enjoy it in print, a little bit of London's history not to be missed captured in oils. scriptionThis is the second painting I have completed of Boy Leslie, I just love the colour of the hull and the red sails, and the way she cuts through the water, thank goodness someone went to the trouble to preserve her. BOY LESLIE was built in 1911 at Galmpton as a fishing trawler and had a considerable history in the UK before being sold to Norway in 1939. She was sailed first as a BM312 out of Brixham and later Plymouth as L0392 when she was bought by the Hewitt family, fishermen of over two centuries' standing who in their heyday operated a fleet of 220 vessels. The fleet was called 'The Short Blue Fleet', after the square, dark blue flag that flew from the mast of each vessel. In 1935, BOY LESLIE was part of the Silver Jubilee...
