Life Is Better When You Are Yachting

This is a photograph of the U.S.S. Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the United States Navy. It is constructed mostly of wood and it is tied up in Charlestown, across from Boston. It is also the only sailing ship remaining in the United States Navy. It is a wonderful ship to visit--so full of life and history. amazing to think that it was the fighting machine of its day!

Early steamships were very dangerous places. They were powered by giant steam boilers that needed to constantly have coal shoveled into them by teams of men. These boilers, if there was an accident could explode, releasing scalding steam which would burn to death anyone in the compartment. One such incident happened on the steamship thresher in the late 1800's. Many died, but one young man escaped to the deck, away from the deadly steam. However hearing the tortured cries of his fellow stokers from down below, he turned right back around and grabbed a fallen friend, saving him at the cost od 3rd-degree burns.

SMS Emden - Swan of the East - was a light cruiser in the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) in World War I. She became a legend by capturing more than 20 ships in East Asia and Indian Ocean, her captain saving the crews of the ships she sunk.

The view depicting sailing ships on Lake Hamana arriving at Aria station in Kosai, Shizuoka Province of Japan. The Tokaido road connected Tokyo to Kyoto with fifty three stations having been built along the road for travelers to rest.
