Alice in Wonderland: "She stretched herself up on tiptoe, and peeped over the edge of the mushroom. Her eyes immediately met those of a large blue caterpillar that was sitting on top quietly smoking a long hookah, and taking not the smallest notice of her or anything else." A more explicit reference to the effects of hallucinogenic mushrooms is rarely to be found in children's literature. (More designs like this in The Blue Box)

While Alice is in Wonderland, she consults a hookah smoking caterpillar about her size problem. It’s such a bother to only be 3" tall, unless you are a caterpillar.
