The intent of Operation Guardian Support is to allow the Border Patrol to increase deterrence and border security capabilities while additional Border Patrol agents are trained at the academy. National Guard units will assist the Border Patrol with logistical and administrative support, aerial support, surveillance efforts, border-related intelligence analysis efforts, and mechanical support.

The New Jersey Army National Guard consists of over 9000 Guardsmen.The Guard is currently engaged in several worldwide and homeland missions. Units have deployed to Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, Germany, Kosovo, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Egypt. The Guard has also deployed to help with the recovery from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The New Jersey Army National Guard is governed through the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. On the home front, the Guard is responsible for Homeland Security tasks in the State of New Jersey.

The 49th Armored Division —nicknamed the "Lone Star"— was one of two armored divisions of the United States Army National Guard, redesignated from the 36th Infantry Division (the "T-Patchers") after World War II, and organized and federally recognized on 24 February 1947.

On 15 November 1965, the most radical reorganization in the history of the National Guard took place on orders of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara creating a Selected Reserve Force (SRF or "super-ready force"). The 39th Infantry Division (Delta Division) was an infantry formation of the Army National Guard, originally formed as the 18th Division in 1917. The division consisted of troops from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. After training at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, the division was deployed to France but did not see combat before the end of World War I. In July 1923 the division was re-designated as the 31st Infantry Division.[1] The 39th Infantry Division was reactivated after World War II with troops from Louisiana and Arkansas and its headquarters in Louisiana. The 45th Fires Brigade is a modular field artillery brigade of the United States Army headquartered in Mustang, Oklahoma. It is a part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. The unit was again redesignated 45th Fires Brigade in 2008 with the implementation of Army Transformation. The 171st Field Artillery Regiment is a military unit created from part of the "B" Battery of the 1st Battalion of the 45th infantry division of the United States Army. It was raised in 1963 and is now based at Weatherford, Oklahoma forming part of the 45th Fires Brigade of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. On 16 September 1941, the 45th Infantry Division was federalized from state control into the regular army force. It was one of four National Guard divisions to be federalized, Assigned to the division were the 158th, 160th, 171st, and 189th Field Artillery Battalions. On 1 September 1950, the 45th Infantry Division was activated as the first National Guard division to be deployed to Korean War.

The 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team ("Jersey Blues") was an infantry brigade combat team of the United States Army National Guard of New Jersey. It was headquartered at the Lawrenceville Armory. The brigade's lineage can be traced back to several different units starting with the 50th Armored Division. The 50th Armored Brigade existed up until 2007–2008 when the brigade was upgraded and converted to a brigade combat team under the Army's new modularity program. The force structure of the Brigade was changed in 2008 when the conversion to the 50th IBCT occurred. The 50th IBCT has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan for periods of up to a 1 year.

The 149th Armor Brigade is an armor heavy national guard brigade in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
