Thomas Meade was an American automobile designer and dealer, best known for his Thomassima series of custom cars based on various makes of Italian sports cars. He was based in Modena, Italy from the early 1960s through the early 1970s, where he met and collaborated with many Modenese carrozzeria, manufacturers, and mechanics. One day, in Costa Mesa, he spotted the back of a 1957 500 TRC, saying it the most beautiful car he had ever seen. The owner revealed that he bought the car in Italy and that there was a warehouse full of old racecars for sale for pennies on the dollar. Fascinated, Meade decided that he would get his hands on one at any cost and in the autumn of 1960, he left home with just $50 and made his way to Italy...

Jim Russell was a California slot car enthusiast who decided that the cars of the day could be greatly improved, and took it upon himself to make that happen. Jim founded Russkit in 1963, launching with his first product, called Russ-Coat, a polyurethane varnish to protect a car's finish from impacts. Next came a line of bodies, first made of fiberglass, and then much lighter vacuum-formed white styrene, which were an immediate success. Simultaneously, Russkit was developing their own line of chassis and motors, including the infamous "Black Widow" four-wheel-drive, dual motor chassis. Jim would go on to produce a wide range of products from controllers and licensed bodies, to tires and wheels, all from a 6,000 square foot Los Angeles.

Keith Black was an American producer of high-performance drag racing engines. Black first made a name for himself in the mid-1940s in boat racing when he set a world record in his second time out at the Salton Sea running one of his first performance engines. He opened Keith Black Racing Engines in 1959 and by 1961 his boat racing exploits included nearly 50 international and national records. Drag racing teams took notice and Black’s builds for the drag strip became one of the winningest engines in the NHRA in the ’60s and his aluminum engine blocks would dominate the market throughout the ’70s. The engines Keith Black produced were based on the Chrysler 426 Hemi, Chevy Big Block, and Oldsmobile Big Block designs.

The first true Grand National model, clad in the model's iconic gloss black with pretty much zero chrome trim, debuted in 1984 and was instantly hailed as a triumph of performance by the automotive press. Pumping out a then-stout 200 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, the rear-wheel drive, 3.8-liter turbo coupe blew the doors off just about everything on the road. The Grand National was a subtle sleeper, giving even the Italian supercars a run for their money... and winning almost every time. Despite high demand for these road rockets, the production number remained low before the plug was pulled, so they are still a hot commodity among car enthusiasts and collectors alike today.

Riverside Speedway was a 1/4 mile dirt track built on top of an old landfill in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. The track opened in 1983, hosting regular racing events several nights a week and, after a full 20-year run, shut down in 2003. From midgets and outlaws to stocks and modifieds, racers from throughout Saskatchewan and beyond made countless memories tearing up the dirt at Riverside Speedway.
