A landmark in Newtown, St Stephen's Anglican Church is considered to be one of the most beautiful Gothic Revival churches in Australia. Designed by Edmund Blackett and completed in 1874, it continues to be in active religious use. Surrounding the church is what remains of the Camperdown cemetery which includes many historic headstones, many of which are lined against the enclosing stone walls. Knowlton Church Number of views as of 5th March 2017 = 650. The ruins of Knowlton Church, 2 miles south of Cranborne in Dorset are surrounded by late Neolithic earthworks, believed to have been constructed around 2500 B.C. The Church itself is in the Norman style and was built between the 12th and 14th centuries A.D. The village of Knowlton was once a thriving community, but the population was wiped out in 1485 by the spread of 'Black Death' or 'Bubonic Plague'. Some people even say that the Church is haunted! St John's Moordown Number of views as of 13th March 2018 = 500. St John's Church, Moordown, Bournemouth, Dorset. The building of the church began in 1873 and it was completed ready for consecration on April 14th 1874. The architect was G.E.Street, who was well known for his Church designs in Victorian times. The last structural addition was the tower, added in 1923. It houses eight fixed bells, cast at a cost of £301. Unusually, the orientation of the church is north-south, rather than east-west, with the tower at the southern end. Date: 10th April 2008. Click here to see another of Bournemouth's churches

St Mary's Church, Bibury Number of views as of 3rd June 2018 = 700. The Saxon church of St Mary's, Bibury, Gloucestershire, England. Bibury is a popular Cotswold village close to the River Coln, and many of its buildings are made from the attractive, honey-coloured Cotswold stone. Artist and craftsman William Morris called Bibury "the most beautiful village in England". It would be interesting to know whether he'd still think so today. In my opinion, much of its charm has been lost by a failure to keep vehicles away from the village centre. The church dates from AD 1130. Date: 8th April 2012.

St Mary's Church, Almer Number of views as of 4th April 2017 = 230. The 12th century church of St Mary's, Almer lies just off the busy A31 between Wimborne and Bere Regis (Dorset, England). Perhaps more familiar landmarks in the vicinity are the thatched Worlds End pub, and the Charborough Estate, surrounded by one of the longest brick walls in England, over 2 million bricks were used in its construction. All Saints, Weybourne Number of views as of 9th June 2019 = 425. The 15th century church of All Saints (Weybourne, North Norfolk, England) shares its grounds with the remains of a 12th century Augustinian priory. That's not all however. The priory incorporated an earlier Saxon building, dating from the 10th or 11th century, and the remains of that church tower still stand (right of shot). Date: 12th August 2010. Bishop's Palace Garden, Wells This view of Wells Cathedral (Somerset, England), taken from within the beautiful Bishop's Palace Gardens shows the cathedral church reflected in the naturally-occurring 'well pools' from which the city takes its name. The Bishop's Palace has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years and the gardens (though changing over the years) have been there a similar length of time. Sheltered beneath the Mendip Hills, and with a population of just over 10,000 residents, Wells is often referred to as England's smallest city, though this is technically incorrect. England's smallest city is in fact the City of London, though this is of course a part of the Greater London metropolis. Date: 28th May 201...

Having seen the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral lit up at night on the way from the airport to my apartment on Rue Dauphine, it became my first choice of photographic subjects in Paris. It was my first 'wow' moment in a fantastic trip & looked just as good in daylight with spring blossoms to enhance the view. Photographed with a Canon 400D in Paris, France. HDR image tonemapped in Photomatix. I took a total of 1770 photos during a 9 day whirlwind trip to Paris & London. One of my favourite views of Notre Dame in black & white. Photographed with a Canon 400D, Paris, France. Notre Dame was a short 10 minute walk from our apartment on Rue Dauphine in the middle of Paris. You walk across one of the many bridges over the Seine (Pont Neuf was the closest). The river is full of boats with exciting, waving tourists. Just in front of the cathedral, to the right, stands a large statue. The inscription reads "Charlemagne et ses levdes", meaning “Charlemagne and his noble servants”. Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was the great Frankish king during the 8th century who helped define the Western Europe we know today through his conquering. St Mary's Church, Appledore, North Devon Number of views as of 17th February 2017 = 400. The parish church of St Mary, with its well-kept churchyard is set back a little way from the waterfront, overlooking the River Torridge in Appledore on the north coast of Devon, England. Built in 1836, the church is unusual in that its tower is offset rather than being central to the nave of the church, as can be seen clearly in this shot. Date: 4th April 2010. All Saints Church, Old Isleworth, August 2020 All Saints Church, Old Isleworth (West London, England) stands beside the River Thames as it has done for centuries. Under a yew tree in the grounds of the church, marked by a small memorial stone, lies a mass grave, a 'plague pit', where the local victims of the plague of 1665 were buried. A poignant reminder that coronavirus was not the first pandemic to strike England's capital. It is estimated that 10% or more of the city's population were wiped out by the plague. And some people are still moaning about having to wear face masks - get over yourselves!! Date: 1st August 2020.

*St Andrews, Kinson, January 2021* The Parish Church of St. Andrew's, Kinson, North Bournemouth (Dorset, England). One of the oldest churches in the Bournemouth area, the tower is believed to date from Norman times, around 1100 A.D. and there may even have been a Saxon church on this site 150 years before that. Although about 4 miles from the coast, the village of Kinson was once a haven for smugglers. This would have been long before nearby Bournemouth became a fashionable seaside resort or the large conurbation that it is today. St Andrew's Church is said to have been at the centre of a network of underground tunnels, with the church tower used as a look-out post. Wellow The pretty village of Wellow (Somerset, England) is about 5 miles south of the city of Bath and lies just within the southern-most boundary of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wellow Station, on the S & D J R (Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, affectionately known as the 'Slow & Dirty') opened in 1874 and closed in 1966. One can imagine standing on the footplate of a steam engine as it hauled a passenger or coal train through this glorious landscape. Sadly the railway is long gone, but the station buildings and signal box have been converted into private dwellings and the track east of the village is now part of the National Cycle Network. *Church of St Peter, Norbury* Dating from the 14th century AD, the village church of St Peter, Norbury (Staffordshire, England) is built from sandstone, except for the red brick tower, which was added in 1759. The church was restored in the 1820s when the north vestry and west gallery were added. Date: 14th April 2018.

St Mary's, Cropredy Number of views as of 14th May 2017 = 230. The Church of St Mary the Virgin in the Oxfordshire village of Cropredy, near Banbury. The majority of the Church dates from the 14th century, though parts of it are up to 300 years older than that. The Church belfry houses 8 bells, one of which commemorates the annual music festival Fairport's Cropredy Convention which has been held in the village since 1976. In 1644, Cropredy was the scene of a major battle in the English Civil War, though despite heavy losses on the Parliamentary side, this particular battle ended in a stalemate. St Tysilio's Church, Sellack Sellack is a small village in the Wye Valley, not far from Ross-on-Wye (Herefordshire, England). The village consists of a handful of houses and the only church in England to be dedicated to the Celtic Saint Tysilio, though there are other places of worship that bear his name in Brittany and Wales, perhaps most notably that in the Anglesey village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in North Wales. Records indicate that Sellack's first priest was John de Henle in 1291, but the church is probably older still, and may originate from St Tysolio's lifetime in the 7th century A.D. Chalbury Church Number of views as of 20th April 2017 = 260. Chalbury is a small village with some 140 inhabitants about 5 miles north of Wimborne, Dorset, England. Somewhat off the beaten track, you're unlikely to pass through the village unless you go looking. The church of All Saints is built in a lovely, peaceful location, atop a small hill, affording fine views of the nearby Horton Tower and across the surrounding Dorset countryside. The oldest parts of the church are over 800 years old, but much of it was rebuilt in the 18th century. Date: 7th June 2009.

New Angle on Knowlton Number of views as of 5th March 2017 = 540. Went for a good long walk in the Dorset countryside last Sunday, starting off in Cranborne, then via Wimborne St Giles to Knowlton Church and back. The weather was sunny and warm, English spring time at its best. Here's another shot of Knowlton Church, dating from the 12th to 14th century, and one of Dorset's much photographed relics. The church is long ruined, reputed to be haunted, and sits at the centre of Neolithic earthworks believed to be over 4,500 years old. Hampreston Church Number of views as of 15th March 2017 = 280. Another view of the Church of All Saints, Hampreston, this time from around the back! The Church, not far from Wimborne in Dorset has changed more than a little through the ages. Its origins are shrouded in the mists of time, most likely Saxon, possibly around 600 A.D. Written records only go back as far as 1261. The tower, nave and chancel are 14th century, the roof 17th century, and the remainder owes much to a Victorian renovation which became necessary in the late 19th century because the church was in a poor state of repair at that time. The village or hamlet of Hampreston was mentioned in the Domesday Book (commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086), but has probabl...

Christchurch Priory & St Catherine's Hill A view of the Priory Church of the Holy Trinity (Christchurch, Dorset, England) taken from nearby local landmark Hengistbury Head. Formerly in Hampshire (before the reorganisation of English county boundaries in the 1970s), the Priory is the longest parish church in England, out-measuring over 20 Anglican cathedrals. The Priory was built between AD 1094 and AD 1150, but was built on the site of an earlier church dating from AD 800. The landmass behind the Priory is St Catherine's Hill, part of a ridge of higher ground between the Avon and Stour valleys. Bronze Age and Iron Age remains were found here, and the site was used for military training for many hundreds of years. Date: 4th February 2018.

Church spires in Budapest, Hungary against a beautiful sunset

Hereford Cathedral Number of views as of 19th December 2017 = 280. Founded over 1200 years ago, Hereford Cathedral is one of England's finest places of worship. The current building was begun in 1079, after its predecessor was plundered and burnt to the ground by marauding Welsh and Irishmen 23 years earlier. This was not the only disaster to befall the Cathedral, for in 1786, the western tower fell, creating a ruin of the entire west front and part of the nave. Restoration work began in 1841 and the Cathedral was re-opened in 1904. The Cathedral's treasures include a rare chained library, whose exhibits include the Mappa Mundi, a map of the world dating from the 13th century, and a copy of the Magna Carta dating from 1217.
