Southerness Lighthouse Number of views as of 19th May 2018 = 1030. Southerness Point is on the Solway Firth, 15 miles south of Dumfries. Its unusual rectangular-walled lighthouse is apparently the second oldest lighthouse in Scotland. The lighthouse was built in 1748-49 to help guide ships up the River Nith estuary to Dumfries. Hydrangea Number of views as of 8th March 2018 = 390. Hydrangea is a genus of over 70 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia (from Japan to China, the Himalayas and Indonesia) and North and South America. Hydrangeas are common throughout Europe, particularly on the Portugese island of Faial, which is known as "The Blue Island" due to the vast numbers of hydrangeas growing there. The plants can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous. This specimen was pictured at Kippford, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. A lovely country drive through a stunning valley from Moffat to St Mary's Loch on the border between Dumfries and Galloway and The Scottish Borders. The area is the watershed of Scotland, with the water to the west draining away to eventually end up in the Atlantic and the water to the east ending in the North Sea. beautiful but very busy in the summer months, but in the quieter winter months it is winding road through stunning countryside.
