The company was founded as the Cleveland Motor Plow Co., later renamed Cleveland Tractor Co., by Rollin H. White, co-founder of the White Motor Company. They were known for their heavy-duty Cletrac crawler tractors, which were used for various applications, including farm work, public works projects, and military operations.
