Description: Lewis and Clark settled down in the winter of 1805 at Fort Clatsop which was located just to the southwest of modern-day Astoria. Rich in history Fort Clatsop commemorates the end of the Lewis & Clark trail. It is here that Astoria was born. Astoria was named after John Jacob Astor and his fur trading company founded fort Astoria in 1811. It however did not become its own city until 1876. Phenomenal views can be seen from Cape Perpetua, the highest viewpoint on the Oregon Coast, located just a few miles south of town. At the 2010 census, the population was 690, and was named one of the "Ten Coolest Small Towns."
