This is mostly Snow Geese with some Greater White-fronter Geese and Canada Geese with a few ducks in the mix as well. Early morning and the American White Pelicans begin to gather along with a few Snowy Egrets. It was a cool autumn morning at the Great Salt Plains State Park and steam was rising off the warmer waters on the spillway. The water was not moving, it was all frozen in place. Waterfowl looking for open water of which there was a small area back by the spillway on both sides. The birds in flight are mostly Common Mergansers, Northern Pintails and a few seagulls. February was brutally cold with several weeks below freezing dipping as low as -14. Once the weather and roads improved I made the drive to the Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma for a bird watching day. Migrating Turkey Vultures by Debra Martz Not olny do large numbers of Pelicans, Cormorants, Blue Jays, Gulls and Ducks arrive during fall migration, so do large numbers of Vultures. They stay around a few weeks before starting to head south. Mourning Dove on the Wire by Debra Martz Most everyone in the US has this bird but it was just sitting there so pretty with the split white and blue background I just had to get its picture! This was near the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas....just around the corner and across the street. I usually walk over to where there is a wetland area before leaving the birding center. Didn't see anything close until I headed back to my car and saw this dove. The mourning dove, Zenaida macroura, is the most abundant and widespread dove in the birds of north America.

Verdin Nest Building ©Debra Martz This was the first time I had seen a Verdin's nest and was quite surprised by the size and messiness of it! Maybe the inside is neater where it flew into it from the bottom with this bit of white fluff! This portion of the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River in Oklahoma is just below the spillway of the Great Salt Plains Lake. The upper portion of this image is the Riverroad Campground where we like to spend time especially during Spring and Fall bird migration. Was odd to see the campground completely empty on this January day as there are usually at least a few campers even when not the best weather. Along the spillway of the lake is a great place to watch birds flying. The are constantly coming and going and feeding. This Ring-billed Gull was happy just gliding around in circles and getting closer to me on each round. Crowded Takeoff by Debra Martz I don't know how they can takeoff when so close and crowded together. The American White Pelican is a very large bird with a length over 5 ft and wingspans up to 9.5 ft. Also, you might notice they are kicking up muddy water. That is just how shallow this lake is becoming due to the ongoing drought. And Then The Cormorants Arrived ©Debra Martz For two weeks I had only been seeing a few Double-Crested Cormorants with the American White Pelicans, even at the previous areas where I stopped and just before moving to one more place on the lake. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least, when I saw these arriving in huge numbers. Ring-billed Gull Handrail Walker ©Debra Martz What I can say other than to advise keeping your hands off the handrails! This one was using the rail to stroll slowly along, stop and check the waters below for possible prey and stroll again leaving its mark. Even when I walked on by, it did not depart the rail. Bald Eagle In Flight by Debra Martz Just as we decided to call the day of bird watching done and pulled out onto the highway to head home, I spotted a Bald Eagle in a tree. We were crossing a bridge and as soon as we made it to the end we pulled off of the road. I jumped out and headed across the bridge by foot in hopes that it would still be there but it wasn't. Tom Turkey Profile ©Debra Martz I first spotted a male turkey in full display near the visitors center shortly after our arrival at Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park. About a mile along the main trail into the park, I spotted a number of turkeys back in the trees so I just stood around awhile. Eventually, this gobbler come out of the trees where the sunlight really showed off all its details and colors. As if the Sandhill Cranes were not loud enough, from the field beyond the bay arose a very loud Murmuration of Starlings. European Starlings use murmuration to confuse predators and to keep warm. And it could have been either one on this morning as it was 24 degrees when we arrived and while watching mainly the Sandhill Cranes we witnessed about 10 Bald Eagles flying over the water and the grassy areas. Morning Flight of the Sandhill Cranes by Debra Martz Just to the left of this landscape is the Sand Creek Bay where 1000s of Sandhill Cranes were wading in the water in the very early morning. Many of them flew before there was ample light for photographs. The light and colors are from the sun rising in the east highlighting the western sky and landscape. Taken during fall migration in early November at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge where just a short hike will lead you to the bay and a very nice bird blind for photographers and bird watchers.
