Common Gallinule Looking Fluffy by Debra Martz The tail showing off white under tail feathers is just one of the displays of courtship during mating season. And, it was March so this is a possible reason for the raised tail. The Common Gallinule in the Americas were once known as the Common Moorhen like those of the Old World. Acadian Flycatcher Photopainting by Debra Martz The first few weeks of May were great for bird watching at Leonabelle Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas. There were tons of migratory birds and birds returning for their summer residence. After so many rainy days, there were plenty of insects for this tiny flycatcher to zip in and out of the tree and catch them on the fly! Gnatcatcher On Greenery by Debra Martz The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is a beautiful, tiny bird that makes itself known by its soft but insistent calls and its constant motion makes it hard to capture. In addition to its constant in and out, up and down movements, it flicks its white-edged tail from side to side, scaring up insects and chasing after them. White Ibis Foraging In the Wetlands ©Debra Martz The brackish water at Leonabelle area of Port Aransas, Texas is the perfect place for bird watching as a large variety of birds can be seen here. This Ibis was probing the mud below the shallow waters for its morning food.

Migrating Pelicans at Rest by Debra Martz Large numbers of American White Pelicans continued to arrive at the Great Salt Plains State Park. It is a stopping point along their route south to fill on fish. After working together herding fish they moved to the the edge of the spillway to rest and some did some preening. Painted Bunting -Painterly by Debra Martz It just seemed to me that with a bird this vibrant and named Painted Bunting that it should be processed with a painterly effect. Quizzical Meadowlark by Debra Martz When I turn onto the gravel road that leads to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge from Hwy 38, I always stop the truck and get out for some bird watching. While most of the birds on the fence on the right or the highline wires on the left will immediately fly before returning, this Western Meadowlark stayed put and just checked out me and my camera gear! After two weeks of below freezing weather, I was surprised to see the American White Pelicans at the Great Salt Plains Lake. I had previously been made aware that there were some resident ones that did not migrate but I really thought they might have headed somewhere else. Most of the lake was still frozen, so they were all in the only area that had thawed. I saw my very first Red-headed Woodpecker after moving to northern Oklahoma in late 2019. Since then, it has been my dream to capture an image of one. That dream happened in just a split second when this one landed along the Eagle Roost trail and just as quickly disappeared deep into the trees. I slowly made my way closer to where it landed in hopes it might return but after some time of waiting, I continued on my hike. Someday I will get that close-up shot of my dreams. But this image shows just how striking this woodpecker is. "The Red-headed Woodpecker has many nicknames, including half-a-shirt, shirt-tail bird, jellycoat, flag bird, and the flying checker-board." The Stately Great Blue Heron by Debra Martz A pose you will see often if you watch these Herons. They often stand motionless when scanning for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps. Dreamy Heron ©Debra Martz I had just been admiring another Tri-colored Heron from the boardwalk over the marsh area, then I turned onto the boardwalk that goes out to the bay when I spotted this one in the Mangroves. Male Northern Cardinal High in the Treetop by Debra Martz I looked out my back window and this handsome guy was sitting in the top of my maple tree. I doubted there was time to grab my camera, dart out the front door, around to the side gate and then slowly approach the backyard. Glad I gave it a try because, as you can see, he waited for his photograph to be taken! Backyard bird watching can be quite good at times! Colorful Brown Pelican by Debra Martz The great thing about North Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas, is that beach driving is still allowed. So somedays I spend just driving and stopping along the beach to watch the coastal shore birds. I had just returned from walking the 2 mile trail at the RV park hoping to get some bird photos. I heard a few but saw none!
