Essex was an American whaler from Nantucket, Massachusetts, which was launched in 1799. In 1820, while at sea in the southern Pacific Ocean under the command of Captain George Pollard Jr., she was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale. Thousands of miles from the coast of South America with little food and water, the 20-man crew was forced to make for land in the ship's surviving whaleboats. The men suffered severe dehydration, starvation, and exposure on the open ocean, and the survivors eventually resorted to eating the bodies of the crewmen who had died. When that proved insufficient, members of the crew drew lots to determine whom they would sacrifice so that the others could live.

The Essex Corp is run by Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mr. Sinister. Apocalypse was an awesome movie.

When the Tri-Lambs left Adams College to attend the 1987 United Fraternity National Convention in Fort Lauderdale, they learned that their reservations at the upscale Royal Flamingo Hotel had been given to the Alpha Betas and that the property doesn't want to be associated with nerds. After looking around with no luck, the displaced Tri-Lambs find a place willing to take them in by the name of Hotel Coral Essex. Sure, it's located in a shady part of town and getting robbed and/or stabbed is a possibility at any time, but hey, it's still on the beach. Thanks to the hospitality of the Hotel Coral Essex, the nerds were not only able to attend the conference, but were able to through one of the biggest bashes in Fort Lauderdale history.

I have always been struck by the image of emblem of Essex, where I was born and bred. Most outsiders snigger and deride the place, once you get to know the place and its secret backwaters it is steeped in history and wonder. If you are keen on cricket and or know an Essex supporter this image may make an ideal gift. The swords are known as saxes which and the Saxons were named after, and Essex of course derives from "east Saxons"
