Blackpool Tower Landscape, May 2019 One of Britain’s best loved landmarks, Blackpool Tower opened in 1894, and last year celebrated its 125th anniversary. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the tower is 518 feet (158 metres) tall. It was designed by two Lancashire architects, James Maxwell and Charles Tuke, who, despite overseeing the laying of the foundation stone, sadly both died before the tower was completed. Over 3,500 tonnes of steel were used in its construction, along with 5 million Accrington bricks for the Tower buildings. The original admission charge was sixpence (6d), with a further 6d for the lift to the top, and another 6d for admission to the circus.
