It is a member of the Freshwater Smelt Family. It is found in Atlantic drainages from Lake Melville in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada to Delaware River in Pennsylvania, USA and west through Great lakes (where it is considered non native). Arctic and Pacific drainages from Bathurst Inlet, Northwest Territories to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Also Pacific drainages of Asia. It inhabits cool clear lakes, medium to large rivers, and coastal waters. It feeds on invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae and aquatic worms. It can reach a maximum length of 35.6 cm (14 inches).

It is a member of the Freshwater Smelt family. It can live in both fresh and salt waters. It is native to most coastal regions of Northern Atlantic and landlocked populations are found in lakes of coastal areas of North, Baltic, White and Barents Sea. It spawns in freshwater lakes and rivers. It feeds on shrimps, crustaceans and fish. It can grow to a maximum length of 45 cm (17.7 inches).

At the age of 15, Rocky Panzo and his family moved to Chicago from Italy in 1914. Located on Chicago's famous Navy Pier, long before it would be transformed into the polished tourist attraction it is today, Rocky's Bait Shop was a favorite of both commercial fishermen and amateur anglers alike. Rocky's relic of a shack at 138 N. Streeter Dr. sat amidst the ramshackle area that made up the water’s edge for decades, providing fresh bait and, as Rocky called it, questionable advice. Eventually, Rocky's sons joined up, adding a fried seafood trailer and changing the name to Rocky and Sons Fish House in the early '60s.
