I thought these squashes from my finca would make an interesting subject for a watercolour. I placed them with dried grass on a shelf in my greenhouse but I thought the composition needed something else so I went back out into my finca and picked the thistles which I put in a small, metal bucket. I started this painting of the women of Terque over a month ago. They were dressed in traditional costume at the village lavadero during the annual day of celebrating the old way of life in La Alpujarra. After a fall last month, when I badly bruised my right side, I was unable to work on it again until last week. At last I can show you the finished watercolour. As you know I mainly paint in watercolours but also use soft pastels, particularly for portrait and figurative work. I decided I would like a change but I find acrylics too artificial and oil painting too physically demanding so I thought I would try egg tempera paints. This very old medium was used by the Renaissance painters before the advent of oil paint and in more recent times by the artist, Andrew Wyeth. For my first painting in this medium I chose a simple subject, this shady corner in Benecid, Almeria, Spain, with tones and textures rather than light and shadow.

The window of Restaurante La Buganvilla, Las Negras. Hens in my orange grove. Because Spain is in lockdown now I have to find the inspiration and subjects for my paintings in the land and garden of my cortijo in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Southern Spain. My chickens spend their day freely pecking around under my orange and olive trees. I included the old wheelbarrow and spade to complete the story in this watercolour and add a contrast to the colours and textures of the chickens and orange tree.

Cave Door - Terque. Although there are cave dwellings in the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense, many more caves are used for storage such as this one in Terque. I liked the old door, the whitewashed stone wall framed by the dried grasses and agave so typical of Almeria. Andalucia, Southern Spain.

This corner of Calle Puerto in Ohanes is typical of the pretty street scenes in the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Andalucia, Spain which I love to paint in watercolour. Previously for these paintings I have used the traditional method of painting on Arches watercolour paper. This painting, however, is a watercolour on canvas especially primed for watercolour. I found the smooth surface of the canvas produces a greater luminosity in the pigments. Using a special fixative varnish enables the canvas to be displayed like an oil painting instead of behind a mount and glass. Winner of the FAA art contest for Women Painters, November 2023.

Cats of Terque. During the lockdown you are likely to encounter more cats than people in the streets of the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Spain. This lovely old Packard was asked with a few other classic American cars parked in Benahadux, Almeria, Spain last Saturday. I do not know datthee of the model but it must be from the 1930s.

Studies of the well known flamenco dancer and my friend, Mayte Beltran from Almeria, Spain. This was a commission as I was asked by a collector to do a painting of a flamenco dancer wearing a black costume so the original is sold.

José, who lives in the cortijo across the lane from me, has a large flock of hens which run free among the olive trees in his finca. He has provided many hiding places for them to explore and find shade, including this old barrel. A lovely subject for a watercolour.

I found this horseshoe whip snake in the lane that passes my farm in Almeria, southern Spain. It had only just died and, although harmless, may have been killed by a neighbour. I was inspired to paint it so I carried it home and made a composition with the snake winding around rocks and wood. At least it has been preserved for posterity in my watercolour. At the autumn festival in Laujar de Andarax, La Alpujarra Almeriense, Andalucia, Spain. I admired the wonderful displays of pumpkins and was inspired to paint a still life. Most of the displays contained many objects and, although they would make a good photo, they were too complex for a good composition for a painting. This lady was at the traditional crafts fair at my neighbouring village of Terque last Sunday. She was demonstrating the old craft of mimbre - making products from esparto grass. This is a view I see nearly every morning when I walk down to the village, Las Negras in Almeria, Spain. A couple of weeks ago this attractive fishing boat, not from Las Negras, was moored for a few days in the perfect spot to make it a focal point of the composition. The fishermen working on the boat, the reflections in the water and the seagulls flying around add life to the scene. I could not miss the opportunity to paint it in watercolours. The little boats from the village are usually pulled up on to the beach and this is the first time I have seen a boat moored here so conveniently. The original painting is for sale. Chickens beneath my nectarine tree. It has been hot, sunny and quite humid here and we have had the occasional thunderstorm. As a result my finca, in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Spain, is looking particularly lush with rampant weeds. Before we cut back the weeds I wanted to capture the lush greens in watercolour. Still life with gourds and tomatoes. I found these dried gourds by the river below my house. I thought they made a good arrangement, placed on a rough shelf in my greenhouse, with some small, ceramic flower pots. I wanted a splash of colour in the painting so I picked some tomatoes to place in the composition. A corner of a patio of the converted old mill of Bornos above the village of Las Negras near my home. A lovely subject to paint with many different tectures, the stone walls, metal bike and chimney, wooden doors and the plants. Lovely colours too and typical Mediterranean plants – vines, cacti, succulents and geraniums. I used a free, sketchy style of watercolour painting for this work.
