I decided to paint a watercolour of my handsome, black kitten Valentine. Many paintings of cats are too sentimental and I wanted to produce something different. I arranged two flower pots and an amphora in a part of my garden where there was an interesting contrast of light and shade. I put Valentine on the ground in front of the pots and he stayed still just long enough for me to capture his profile.

During the third wave of Covid sweeping through Almeria, excursions to visit places to paint are not a sensible idea so my latest watercolour is of my home. The two little cats have made themselves at home on my finca. I arranged the old wheelbarrow and spade and waited patiently for the cats to pose and one of my hens to come to the scene. My latest watercolor and back to my old style of more detailed work which I think suits this subject. This entrance to a property in my village, Las Negras, epitomises the Mediterranean. The sun-blistered blue door, the sharp shapes and shadows formed by the cactus and the palm tree against the intense blue sky combine to form a composition which is very typical of where I live. The two Spanish donkeys belong to Manuel, a neighbour of mine in Las Negras, who has a small farm on the edge of the village. They usually come to the fence to speak to me when I go there to buy fresh vegetables. I am particularly fond of donkeys so I enjoyed painting them. I hope you like the painting too.
