A revamped People's Free Food program design with a more modern feel.

The Black Panther Party fought against police brutality, promoted activism that organized, educated and fed their community while being mercilessly hunted by the FBI. While the Panthers fought against police brutality, they also invested heavily in community organizing and aid. Their free breakfast program fed thousands of hungry kids before school; they set up health clinics, child development centers and food pantries. They handled pest control, gave away coats and shoes in the winter, and started a free bus route to prisons for people to visit their incarcerated family members and loved ones.

The Black Panther Party fought against police brutality, promoted activism that organized, educated and fed their community while being mercilessly hunted by the FBI. While this history might be new to many, it isn’t to the activists who have inherited many aspects of their work from the Panthers: their socialist ideals and focus on grassroots organizing. On a larger scale, some of the ideas that the Black Panthers espoused—including prison abolition—have begun making their way into mainstream discourse. UNITE!

Promoting the advancement of black people.

The federal government began toying with free breakfast for underprivileged children in 1966, but in 1969, there still wasn't free breakfast and kids were going to school hungry. In Oakland, the Black Panthers jumped into action, organizing their own free breakfast program. Formally called the Free Breakfast for School Children Program, the program expanded beyond breakfast to provide free groceries to those in need, utilizing the same donor network that got the breakfast program up and running. People's Free Food Program design comes from the posters used at the breakfast locations, on community free grocery bags, and the shirts many volunteers wore.
