Barge Socks
Description: A Thames sailing barge of the type once common around the Thames estuary and England's East Coast. Being flat bottomed with a shallow draft of only two and a half feet they could sail into the creeks and inlets around the Thames estuary to carry goods. The collapsible main mast allowed them to sail under bridges. They were also very stable and possessed cargo space above and below deck.
Description: This thrifted gem came to us from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and appears to be a crew shirt from an underwater pipeline operation, specifically on Barge 207. A little research revealed that Barge 207 was designed and built in 1958 as one of the first dedicated lay barge underwater pipeline platforms, and is apparently still owned and operated by the Brown & Root company. So whether you’re in the underwater pipeline field or just want to impress women by telling them that you are, Barge 207 is the one for you!
Description: Founded in 1935, Harbor Tug & Barge Company was one of San Francisco Bay's first dedicated tugboat operators. In business for over half a century, at its peak, Harbor Tug maintained a fleet of 15 high-powered tugboats, and over 70 barges. Aside from guiding freighters in and out of the bay, Harbor Tug's barges were used for everything from waterfront construction and demolition projects, to the haulage of bulk materials and garbage.
Description: Founded in 1897, Liverpool Screw Towing & Lighterage Co. operated a fleet of cock tugs - no laughing, please - which are smaller tugboats used in ports where larger tugs would be tough to maneuver like the port of Liverpool. These were called cocks, or cockboats, and the people in charge of them were called coxswains, which is now a term used in rowing. Screw towing is moving ships with tugs and lighterage is when you transfer cargo from a larger ship to a smaller one. Liverpool's entire fleet included 'cock' in each ship's name like 'Crested Cock,' 'Black... ok, now feel free to laugh ;)
